


Iowa follows the lyrical style that vocalist established on Slipknot's debut it includes strong use of to describe dark themes including, anger, disaffection, and rejection. While the album does have elements of, Iowa has less hip hop elements than Slipknot's self-titled album, focusing more on elements of genres such as death metal. They compared several songs, namely 'Disasterpiece,' 'People = Shit' and 'The Heretic Anthem' as more -influenced than most of the nu metal that the album contained. After the death of Gray on May 24, 2010, and Jordison's firing on December 12, 2013, Alessandro Venturella and Jay Weinberg were brought in as replacements. Since their inception, the band went through various lineup changes and eventually ended up with nine members shortly before their signing to Roadrunner Records in 1999. They also performed at least two shows in June 1996 under the moniker "Pygsystem." At first, they called themselves "The Pale Ones," then debuted as "Meld" on November 5, 1995, and finally settled on "Slipknot," a suggestion by Jordison.
